How to Dispose of Prescription Medication

How to Dispose of Prescription Medication

How does your medicine cabinet look? Do you have expired medications or medications you no longer use and have no plans on ever using again? How should you dispose of these medications? Knowing how to properly dispose of unused medication will help keep it from accidentally being taken by someone other than the person for whom the medicine was prescribed. Is it safe to throw them out in the trash or flush them down the toilet?  Learn about the proper ways to dispose of those medications you’ve got cluttering up your medicine cabinets!

BEST Option: Prescription Drop Offs
Some law enforcement offices and pharmacies are collecting unwanted medicines from residents until a permanent statewide program is in place. To find a temporary drop-off program near you, click here. You can also call local government household trash and recycling services in your area to ask if there are any drop offs near you.

BAD OPTIONS:

Bad idea #1: Throwing medicine in the trash is a bad idea. Even mixing medicines with coffee grounds or kitty litter before throwing them in the trash will NOT prevent drug theft.

“Unused prescription drugs thrown in the trash can be retrieved and abused or illegally sold…. Take back programs are the best way to dispose of old drugs.”  – DEA, April 30

Furthermore, trashing old medicine won’t keep children and pets safe from accidentally finding it and ingesting it, as some may assume. And, medicines that make it to landfills can be toxic to people and wildlife. Even medicine that decompose and emit low-levels of drugs can be harmful.

Bad idea #2: Crushing medicine before throwing in the trash is a bad idea.Trying to crush pills can expose you to the drug through contact (via skin or inhaling).

Bad idea #3:  Flushing medicine down the toilet or down the drain.  Putting dangerous drugs into our sewer systems can pollute our waters. This can harm fish and other aquatic life, contaminating our food and water supplies. Most medicine are not removed by wastewater treatment plants or septic systems.

Scientists have found medicines in surface, ground and marine waters as well as soils and sediments in the Pacific Northwest.  Even at very low levels, medicines in the environment hurt aquatic life.

Even non-prescription “over the counter” medicine must be disposed of carefully. While the threat of drug addicts stealing it from your trash aren’t there, if it’s expired or otherwise harmful you don’t want it to get into the wrong hands. And, it’s not something that we need seeping into our waters or poisoning our wildlife!

Where to Really Send Holiday Mail to Heroes #HMFH (And Where Not To)

Where to Really Send Holiday Mail to Heroes #HMFH (And Where Not To)

You may have seen the picture above circulating around the Internet. Although a really nice gesture, unfortunately it’s a waste of time. You cannot send a Holiday card or package to “any” soldier for security reasons. It will be returned to sender (you).

If you would like to legitimately participate, check out Holiday Mail for Heroes (click link). From now on, you must take part in an event to get your cards, letters or packages to the troops!

There are many service members and veterans separated from their families this holiday season due to deployments and hospital stays.  The American Red Cross Holiday Mail for Heroes (HMFH) program empowers people like you and me to “Give Something That Means Something” by sending a card of thanks and support to the members of the Armed Forces, veterans and their families. But, don’t send a card just anywhere. It will NOT be delivered. It’ll be returned to you!

Beginning in 2014, the Holiday Mail for Heroes program will take on a different look, as Red Cross chapters across the continental U.S. and Red Cross offices on military installations overseas will take complete control of the program. There will no longer be a national Holiday Mail for Heroes P.O. Box to which cards are sent. Check with your local Red Cross for times and locations of events and for opportunities to get involved. You must take part in an event to get letters to the troops!

Moving forward, local Red Cross offices will collect, sort, and distribute the holiday cards using an events-based approach in their local communities.

Local Red Cross offices will:

  1. Hold events to sign or make holiday cards
  2. Schedule card-sorting times.
  3. Coordinate card delivery to the military, vets and families in their communities.

These changes will allow local Red Cross offices to better concentrate on reaching out to the members of the military, veterans and families in their community — neighbors helping neighbors.

Easy DIY Minion Halloween Costume {Free Printable Pattern}

Easy DIY Minion Halloween Costume {Free Printable Pattern}

If you love Universal Picture’s Minions, who originally debuted in Despicable Me, you will LOVE this super easy and fast do-it-yourself Halloween Minions costume!

I made Stuart, the one-eyed short minion with combed hair. I actually didn’t even bother with the hair, but you could easily draw it on with a Sharpie or similar permanent maker.

Stuart is playful, friendly, intelligent and funny. He is skillful at video games like his friend Dave. He can also be the most sincere and innocent out of all the minions. He seems to have a rebellious attitude too. He’s considered to be a slacker among the other Minions, preferring to chill out and play the ukulele than listen to the rules. Also, he was said to be always hungry in Minions, where he attempted to eat Kevin and Bob, able to think of them as bananas, and even wanted to eat a yellow fire hydrant in New York, also thinking it as a banana or food as well.

Pick YOUR favorite minion and make him! You will be surprised and proud of how easy it is, and how awesome it turns out!

Materials you’ll need:

COST BREAKDOWN: I made this for about $5 total using things I had already (and borrowed from my dad!) I literally could have made it for free (we had everything!) but I really wanted the yellow hardhat! lol

  1. Hard hat or baseball cap (preferably yellow). The minions actually wear MANY colors of hard hats. You could do almost any color and it would work! My dad had white hard hats I could have borrowed (he even said it was okay if I wanted to paint it yellow!), but since I found this awesome minion-yellow hardhat on Amazon for around $5, shipped free with Prime as an Add-on, I could not resist! I was surprised at how good the quality was too!
    minions-hard-hat-white mionions-hard-hat-orange minions-hardhat-blue minions-hard-hat-red
  2. Black electrical tape (for goggle band, we had some “in stock” at our house)
  3. 1 or 2 canning rings (also known as canning band or jarring band — the thing that screws onto the top of a canning jar to hold the lid on, we had these)
  4. Printed photo of minion’s eyes (I used my Epson Photo Printer, but you could print on any printer or have it printed very cheaply at your local store (e.g., Walgreens Photo or Walmart)
  5. Bib overalls (also borrowed from Dad!)
  6. Minion yellow t-shirt (borrowed from — you guessed it, Dad!)
  7. Work boots (optional, and we had these already)

How to make a Minion Halloween Costume

First, I  made the hat. It took me about 3 minutes! Super fast and easy. 🙂 Remember, I made Stuart the Minion, who has one eye. If you’re making a minion with two eyes, use two canning rings and attach them to each other with black electrical tape first.

  1. First, print pictures of minion eyes (see patterns below).
  2. Now, using the canning ring as a guide, draw a circle guide of where you’ll cut out the eye
  3. Cut out eye to fit (you may need to trim it down more than your original drawn guide so it fits inside ring)
  4. Attach black electrical tape around one side of canning ring
  5. Position canning ring on the front of the hat, top-side facing out (top-side as it would be screwed on a jar)
  6. Unroll about 2′ of black electrical tape and carefully extend around hardhat to look like the band or strap for minion’s goggles
  7. Cut electrical tape and attach to other side of canning ring. Ring should be snug up against the hat
  8. Slide the eye cutout into ring – you’re done!
  9. As I mentioned, I didn’t bother with the hair. But, Stuart has combed hair so you could draw it on with a Sharpie or similar permanent marker. For minions with 3D hair, you could drill small holes in the hardhat and insert black bendable wire (also known as pipe cleaners or wire stems).

Now, get dressed in your minion clothes (bibs, yellow tshirt and boots), and you’re ready to go! 🙂

FREE Minion Eye Pattern – Printable Minion Eye for Costume

To make this project even easier, I made these Minion Eye Patterns for you! Grab these 4×6 photos which are Printable Minion Eyes for your Minion Halloween Costume.

I set them up to use with a regular-mouth canning rings (2.5″ diameter), so they’ll be the right size! You can print slightly larger (or just cut larger) if you want to use the larger wide-mouth canning ring (3.25″ diameter).

To print: click link to open picture or click picture to open a larger version. Print! See instructions above for how to use them!

About the Minions

minions-movieEvolving from single-celled yellow organisms at the dawn of time, Minions live to serve, but find themselves working for a continual series of unsuccessful masters, from T. Rex to Napoleon. Without a master to grovel for, the Minions fall into a deep depression. But one minion, Kevin, has a plan; accompanied by his pals Stuart and Bob, Kevin sets forth to find a new evil boss for his brethren to follow. Their search leads them to Scarlet Overkill, the world’s first-ever super-villainess. -Source Google

In a happy suburban neighborhood surrounded by white picket fences with flowering rose bushes, sits a black house with a dead lawn. Unbeknownst to the neighbors, hidden beneath this home is a vast secret hideout. Surrounded by a small army of minions, we discover Gru, planning the biggest heist in the history of the world. He is going to steal the moon. (Yes, the moon!) Gru delights in all things wicked. Armed with his arsenal of shrink rays, freeze rays, and battle-ready vehicles for land and air, he vanquishes all who stand in his way. Until the day he encounters the immense will of three little orphaned girls who look at him and see something that no one else has ever seen: a potential Dad. The world’s greatest villain has just met his greatest challenge: three little girls named Margo, Edith and Agnes. Written by Universal Pictures for IMDB

What is a Twitter Party + How to Attend, Participate and Get Free Stuff

how-to-twitter-party

What is a Twitter Party + How to Attend, Participate and Get Free Stuff

Wondering how to join a Twitter party? If you’ve been invited to Twitter parties, but steer clear because you’re unclear, here’s all you need to know!  They’re not complicated; they’re actually really fun! And best of all, you can get tons of free stuff with these Twitter party tips.

What is a Twitter Party?

Basically, Twitter Parties are a way to discuss a topic on Twitter. Also known as hashtag chat, because you’ll use a relevant hashtag– the word after the number sign # (the number sign is technically called octothorp as my nerdy engineer husband would want you to know). Hashtags are searchable. So, you can search the hashtag and see every tweet made with that hashtag. To be included in the party, just put the hashtag in your tweets (posts on Twitter) and everyone searching the hashtag will see you too.

Twitter parties are fun because they move quickly! You can learn a lot, and meet other people online who are interested in things you’re interested in. What’s not to love?

How to Join a Twitter Party

There are many ways to attend a Twitter party.

Follow GimmieFreebies on Twitter

First, you’ll need to Find a Twitter Chat Going On Now and then take note of the hashtag they’re using.

The simplest way to follow along is to log onto Twitter and search the hashtag. That means, literally, just typing in the hashtag in the search box at Twitter.com.

search-for-twitter-party

Like I said, it moves quickly. You’ll have more Tweets to read in no time. Just click the button to view more.

view-new-tweets

That’s it!

How to Participate in a Twitter Party

Follow the simple instructions above to watch a Twitter chat as it happens. But, if you want to get involved and participate in the chat, you’ll need a little more info.

Before you participate, be sure to read the rules – if any are shared.

General rules of Twitter Parties (and online life in general!):

  • Don’t spam! Keep it relevant to the topic. Any off-topic comments you want to make to someone can be directed at them (use @ before their name) but leave off the hashtag for those.
  • Be nice. Before posting, ask yourself: Is it necessary? Is it true? Is it kind? If not, skip it.

If you’re having trouble keeping up with a Twitter party using a browser-based Twitter page, consider using a website specifically created for Twitter chats and hashtag tracking such as Twubs and TweetChat. They are fantastic! I highly recommend either.

Where to Find Twitter Parties

There’s not one easy answer to that question, unfortunately. You can Find a Twitter Chat Going On Now and then take note of the hashtag they’re using. But in my experience the really great ones will take a little more work to find.  You can Google it, such as searching the past 24 hours for “Join Our Twitter Party Giveaway.”  Or, just keep an eye out for notices from your favorite brands on social media and in email.

When I Die, What Happens to My Facebook Account?

When I Die, What Happens to My Facebook Account?

Have you ever asked yourself: When I die, what happens to my Facebook account?

In my experience when friends and family passed away, their loved ones have successfully gained access to the dearly departed‘s Facebook account.

But did you know there’s actually a security setting you can set up to add a loved one to your account in the event of your death? It’s called memorialization, and it’s easy to do – NOW while you can bequeath your account to whomever you choose.

Don’t worry, they can’t come in and take over while you’re alive. It’s not until you’ve died that your account is accessible. There’s actually a bunch of things they can’t do (scroll down and read the list).

Here’s how to set up a Legacy Contact on Facebook:

  1. Click link to go to your security settings on Facebook
  2. Find the My Legacy Contact section
  3. Add a Facebook friend (type in their name and click ADD)
    facebook-legacy-contact
  4. Optionally, you can send your friend a message letting them know you chose them and what that means.
If you prefer, select NOT NOW and you can talk to them in person instead.

Hi XXX, Facebook now lets people choose a legacy contact to manage their account if something happens to them: https://www.facebook.com/help/1568013990080948

Since you know me well and I trust you, I chose you. Please let me know if you want to talk about this.

    legacy-contact-announcement

  5. To change the person you’ve selected at any time, go back to the My Legacy Contact in Facebook Security settings and click “REMOVE” under their picture/name. Set up a new contact by repeating steps above.

What is a legacy contact?

A legacy contact is someone you choose to look after your account if it’s security settings on Facebook. Once your account is memorialized, your legacy contact will have the option to do things like:

  • Write a pinned post for your profile (ex: to share a final message on your behalf or provide information about a memorial service)
  • Respond to new friend requests (ex: old friends or family members who weren’t yet on Facebook)
  • Update your profile picture and cover photo

You also have the option to allow your legacy contact to download a copy of what you’ve shared on Facebook, and we may add additional capabilities for legacy contacts in the future.

Your legacy contact can’t:

  • Log into your account
  • Remove or change past posts, photos and other things shared on your Timeline
  • Read messages you’ve sent to other friends
  • Remove any of your friends

Learn more about memorialization and how to add a legacy contact to your account.

If you’re a legacy contact, learn how to manage a memorialized profile.

Note: You must be 18 or older to select a legacy contact.

10 Tips for a Successful Garage Sale

10 Tips for a Successful Garage Sale

Beit a garage sale, yard sale or estate sale – the season is here! (YAY!)

Now is the perfect time to plan your strategy and earn the most cash for your unwanted stuff!

Like this? Repin it on Pinterest!

You can also learn insider secrets and find the best yard sale deals from your neighbors at their garage sales!

Selling your unwanted stuff at a yard sale is also a great way to recycle, rather than throw things away.  I enjoy an occasional yard sale, but actually HAVING a yard sale seems like SO much work it makes me cringe!  It’s hard to get motivated!  So, here are the TOP tips for yard sales to maximize your return on investment and your hard work.

And don’t miss our FREE Printable Yard Sale Signs and FREE Printable Yard Sale Price Tags to make your job a little easier.

Gimmie’s Top Yard Sales Tips – How to have a successful yard sale

  1. NEED A PERMIT? – if your area requires a permit, be sure to get one in advance to avoid potential fines!  Call NOW and see if there are any updates to yard sale laws in your area. Before I moved from Southern California to Wisconsin, I planned to have a few yard sales to get rid of everything I could. Unknowingly, I had a yard sale on a weekend they weren’t allowed. Luckily I didn’t put up any signs (because a neighbor had signs all over directing traffic past my place), but when a city worker stopped by and shut us down, he told us that putting up signs without permission carries a fine of $100 for the first and $50 for each additional sign. OMG! And, the city I lived in did not issue permits but did allow anyone to have sales ONLY on the first weekend of each quarter. Thankfully that was the weekend following my attempted first sale, so I packed up that day and just did it later.
  2. ADVERTISE / SIGNS – online and in the newspaper – be specific; include pictures and prices when possible. There are MANY free resources such as your local Facebook Garage Sale group, Recycler, Cheapcycle, Craigslist or find local sites on which to list your sale!
    • Feel free to use our FREE printable yard sale signs (scroll down).  They’re customizable, so you can enter your info and print! Easy! Post signs at strategic locations, heavily traveled intersections near your sale, and even in local markets!  Invest in some brightly colored paper at the dollar store for eye-catching signs, and please take them down after your sale! If you’re going to make your own signs, make sure they are readable!
    • While you’re at the dollar store, grab a few helium balloons to tie to the signs to draw more attention to signs.
    • WORD OF MOUTH -Tell friends/neighbors and ask them to spread the word! Ask customers that day to tell their friends too.
  3. ORGANIZE MERCHANDISE / STAGING– Group like things together to make it easy to find. Just like a store, you could have different areas for different items, such as a clothing section, shoes, household, electronics, etc.
    • HANG CLOTHES when possible (garage sale idea: a closet pole between two ladders works well, or tie up a closet pole to the rafters in your garage)
    • TABLES – Make displays and table space (yard sale idea:  if you’re low on big banquet tables, saw horses and plywood, or an old door on boxes works great!) Consider windy days might knock over breakables, so set up accordingly.
    • CLEAN YOUR STUFF! Nobody wants to pay for dirty, dusty crap that should have been cleaned up. 😉  Take some time and clean things so they display better!
    • STAGING – When you position your stuff, think about window displays. Window dressings are a way stores and shops lure customers in to check out their stuff. Put your brightly colored items, cute, unusual or eye-catching things out front. And, be sure to stage the lower priced things by the entrance to your sale! When customers arrive, they’ll see low prices and think, “wow, these prices are great!” and be more likely to enter and buy something! It’s also a good idea to have a “FREE” section out front to lure people in!
    • SHADE – if you have a canopy or EZ-up, it’s a welcome relief to shoppers who may linger longer if they have a spot out of the hot sun!
    • BAGGING AREA – this is the perfect time to use that huge bag of plastic grocery bags you have!  Have them on hand for customer’s purchases. Another great idea is having newspapers handy to wrap up breakables.
  4. GROUP / MULTIFAMILY SALES – Join or organize a neighborhood or multifamily yard sale. Sale-goers will be more likely to visit if there’s more stuff for sale. However, city-wide garage sales aren’t always the best for sellers! Surprisingly, from the people I’ve polled and from my own experience, when you have a sale during a huge city-wide sale your competition is so strong that you might not sell as much as you’d think.  That’s the time to price things really low and make sure your sale is one that can be easily found by potential buyers.
  5. ACCOUNTING – Keep track of what you’ve sold (especially if you’re collecting for multi-family sale), and be sure to make correct change! For multi-family sales, you could use different color price tags to note who the item belonged to.  When item is sold, remove the price tag and stick it to a notebook. At the end of your sale, tally up each family’s earnings and divvy up the proceeds.
  6. PRICING – How much should you charge? The key is pricing fairly: not too high, not too low. You can loosely compare to thrift store prices, although garage sales are typically priced much lower.
    • MAKE CHANGE – Make sure you have cash to make change ($1 dollar bills, quarters, etc.)
    • CLEARANCE – Consider marking everything down on the last day (and be sure to make BIG signs showing that!) For example: “Last Day! Everything is 50% off!”
  7. PRICE TAGS – make price signs such as “clothing $1 per piece” or “everything’s $1 unless otherwise marked.”  Or, put prices on each item. Masking tape works great as price tags, just write on with a marker!  Feel free to use our FREE Printable yard sale price tags (scroll down), or, buy “dot” stickers at any office supply store for under $3 per (example: Avery Permanent Color Coding Labels, 0.25 Inches, Round, Green, Pack of 450 (5791))  People will be more likely to buy if they know what things cost. I’ve been to lots of sales where nothing is marked, and I usually just leave. 🙂
  8. ACCEPT CREDIT CARDS – more people will shop, and shop bigger, if they can pay with their credit or debit card!  Get a FREE card reader we recommend and turn your smartphone or tablet into a mobile credit card machine!
  9. CLEAN UP – plan to have Goodwill or Salvation Army pick up unsold items you don’t want, at the end of your sale.  If you itemize your income taxes, charitable deductions can be a great write-off!  Or, post the items on Craigslist or Freecycle (if your group allows).
  10. LEMONADE STAND – don’t forget to offer refreshments! You might just make more on lemonade than any other item! Check out our cheap-yet-amazing lemonade recipe, and consider offering cold cans of soda pop, water, cookies, hot dogs, etc.

Easy DIY Noise-Cancelling Earbuds Headphones

Easy DIY Noise-Cancelling Earbuds Headphones

Trouble with your ear buds staying in? Or, is outside noise too loud? This DIY Noise-Cancelling Earbuds hack is for you! It’s easy, and best of all – it’s FREE! Compare to these Sennheiser earbuds that start at $30 and go up to way past $100 each!

How? Read on!..

Since the iPod came onto the scene, ear buds have surged in popularity. They’re not only a great way to listen to your favorite music, radio or podcast on the go, they’re a great-sounding alternative to blasting your tunes publicly (which often isn’t allowed). Thanks to Apple’s incredible advertising campaigns, earbuds had all but replaced the old bulky headset for years. Then, when Dr. Dre came out with Beats audio headphones, that all changed and the headphone reigned supreme once again.

But, earbuds are still fantastic for a lightweight, easy-to-carry and wear alternative when jogging, walking or riding bike – or just working out at the gym. Commuting and traveling are great times to opt for the smaller in-ear speaker. Anytime you’re on the go and don’t want to lug around a big, lunky headphones.

But, you already know what earbuds are! Here’s how to make your own Noise-Isolating Earbuds for free! It’s easy, and you’ll LOVE them! I think they stay in your ear MUCH better than traditional ear buds. And the sound quality is much, much better because it blocks out background noise, cancels outside noise, and isolates your music right into your ear where you want it!

Benefits of Noise Cancelling Earbuds:

  • Comfortable
  • Don’t fall out
  • Sound great
  • Reduce / cancel outside noise
  • Powerful bass-driven stereo sound
  • Excellent comfort
  • Effective noise blocking
  • High-quality ear-canal phones

Do It Yourself Noise Cancelling Earbuds:

1. Get a FREE pair of foam earplugs. You can get FREE ear plugs mailed to you – in this link.  Or, pick up some cheap earplugs (usually less than $1) at the store next time you go.

2. Ear Plugs: Squish your ear plugs flat as shown in picture, then cut length to size.  Set aside so they can expand back to their original shape.

3. Ear Plugs: When re-inflated, squish earplug flat the other way.  Use a mechanical pencil cap, or regular pencil to puncture a hole in the center for the earbud to fit into.

4.  Ear Buds: Carefully remove each outer cover piece (the part that inserts into your ear).

5. Fit your new custom ear plugs over your ear buds and allow them to re-inflate to regular shape/size.
