DIY Wipes: Homemade Flushable Wipes {Costs less than 10¢ per pack!}

Wipes. We love them, we hate paying full price for them and we don’t want to talk about them.

Whether it’s flushable Cottonelle Fresh wipes for grown ups or Wet Wipes baby wipes for little bottoms, wipes help clean up shh… er..  well, you know what I mean. It’s a sh… crappy job, but somebody’s gotta do it. 😉

Like it? Repin it on Pinterest!

What’s the difference? The big difference between baby wipes (homemade diaper wipes) and homemade flushable wipes for grown-ups is the ingredients. Although you can certainly try whatever you’d like (I’m not about to start policing butt wipes), using baby products such as baby wash and baby oil for baby wipes makes sense! I’m making the grown-up version and it’s worked very well for my family.

Why make wipes? I wanted to make my own wipes because buying my favorite Cottonelle Fresh Flushable Wipes can get expensive! The last time I bought flushable wipes, I bought at Sam’s Club in bulk. I paid over $10! Sure, I got a lot of wipes, but the problem was, it took so long to use them that they got moldy! Yuck! Now you can make your own flushable wipes in whatever quantity works best for you.

What’s the best way to make flushable wipes? I’ve seen quite a few different ways to make flushable wipes online and on Pinterest. Many suggest cutting a whole roll of paper towels in half with a knife, then adding liquid. That seems like a big commitment and my machete is out on loan (giggle).  One blog talks about tearing each paper towel from a whole roll, and then folding them on top of each other just so. I might do that once… but I can’t see doing that every few weeks! (Let’s be honest, I probably wouldn’t do that once.)

How I did it: I used 12 paper towels (yes, 12!) and made two cuts with scissors (cutting into thirds). Not that you couldn’t use all those the paper towels from the other examples eventually, but my way seems much easier!

Simple ingredients you have at home. And lastly, some of the ingredients suggested in other “recipes” for homemade wipes are things I’d never even heard of! I mean, sure you can use whatever you want. But, I like easy and fast. I’m funny like that.

Price breakdown: as I said, buying wipes can really add up. If you buy a regular container of Cottonelle Fresh Flushable Wipes, you’ll pay around $2.49 per package, and up to $20 if you buy in bulk! You’ll save per sheet (as low as 4¢ each) but you have to shell out twenty bucks!

  • The Member’s Mark paper towels were $14.98 at Sam’s Club, for a pack of 12 “super mega rolls”. Each has 175 sheets per roll. I used 12 sheets. Each roll costs $1.25, and each sheet costs $0.007 (that’s just over half a penny, and a code name for James Bond). So, my 12 sheets cost a whopping 8.5 cents.
  • The soap was another bulk deal, so I’m going to call the tablespoon I used about 3 cents.
  • The bottle of baby oil I used cost $1, and I used a tablespoon. I’m calling that another penny, give or take.
  • I reused the container I had from my Cottonelle wipes
  • And, water is basically free

Total for a whole container of Homemade Flushable Wipes = less than 10¢

So, without further ado… Here’s the EASY, CHEAP and FAST way to make your own Homemade Flushable Wipes using stuff you have at home. Oh, and I even reused the container! How’s that for being green?!

Gimmie’s Homemade Flushable Wipes

Ingredients

  • 2 cups water
  • 1 tablespoon soap (liquid, or bar soap grated into small pieces)
I used Dove sensitive bar soap
  • 1 tablespoon baby oil
  • 12 paper towels, folded
I used Member’s Mark paper towels from Sam’s Club, but you can use anything that’s not super flimsy (Bounty, Viva, etc.). My paper towels are perforated so you can tear off smaller pieces (1/3 regular size) which is perfect for this!
  • Air-tight container
I reused a Cottonelle wipes container so the wipes pop up like a Kleenex box

Directions

  1. If using liquid soap, skip to step 3
  2. If using bar soap: carefully grate bar soap with a cheese grater. Put soap flakes and water in a medium saucepan. Boil until soap flakes are melted (about 5-10 minutes), stirring occasionally. Allow mixture to cool
  3. Add baby oil to water & soap, and stir
  4. Fold paper towels on top of each other like an accordion (when you pick them up they’ll look like a zigzag, shown below)
  5. Cut the stack of paper towels into thirds with scissors (which was the perfect size for my container)
  6. Arrange paper towels in container and pour liquid on top

As you can see, it’s really quick and easy to make your own homemade wipes!

Other ideas for ingredients:

Since some of our readers might want to use different ingredients, I scouted out a few other recipes. I didn’t use these things, but apparently some people have.

  • Summer’s eve feminine wash
  • Essential oils
  • Vinegar

Here are some other recipes I found:

Homemade Baby Wipes

  • 3/4 cup water, boiled
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 tablespoon baby shampoo

Pour liquid over a whole roll of separated and then meticulously folded paper towels, and store in airtight container. Similar to Huggies wipes.

DIY Wet Wipes

  • 2 cups hot water
  • 1 tablespoon Baby Wash
  • 1 tablespoon Baby Oil
  • a few drops of Tea Tree Oil (an antibacterial to keep mold away)

Add liquid to a roll of paper towels sawn in half with a knife. Store in air-tight container. Similar to Wet Wipes baby wipes

DIY Homemade Hairspray Recipe – 8¢ Per Bottle

DIY Homemade Hairspray Recipe – 8¢ Per Bottle

Homemade hairspray is simple to make, and can be made with a few simple ingredients you probably have sitting around. Why bother to make your own hairspray? Well, if you use hairspray on a daily basis, making your own batch is much more cost effective.

Save Money: A 7 oz bottle of hairspray costs between 85¢ to $5.00 and up at stores. Even comparing to the cheapest I’ve ever found hairspray in stores, you can save up to TEN TIMES by making it yourself. Let’s break down the cost of the ingredients.  A 16 oz bottle of rubbing alcohol can be purchased at Dollar Tree for $1. A tablespoon equals .5 oz.  Since this recipe calls for 2 tablespoons, you can make 16 batches of hairspray with one $1 bottle of alcohol.  That means you’re spending about 6.25¢ per batch on rubbing alcohol. Water is basically free.  A 5 lb bag of Great Value sugar at Walmart is $2.68.  There are 32 teaspoons in one pound, or 160 teaspoons in 5 lbs. Two teaspoons of this sugar would equate to approximately 1.6¢.  Therefore, you’ve blown a whopping 8 cents per bottle making your own homemade hairspray.

Supplies needed:

1/2 cup of hot water
2 Tablespoons of Rubbing Alcohol
2 Teaspoons of  white sugar
Empty Spray Bottle*
A spoon to stir

*I recycled an old leave-in conditioner bottle. Look around the house, I am sure you have something you can reuse!

Step 1:

Heat a 1/2 cup of water to a boil.

Step 2:

Add 2 teaspoons of regular, white sugar to the 1/2 cup of hot water.

addsugar

Step 3:

Stir sugar into the hot water until completely dissolved.

stir

Step 4:

Add 2 tablespoons of rubbing alcohol to the hot water and sugar mixture.

Step 5:

Stir the rubbing alcohol and sugar water well. Next pour the mixture into an empty spray bottle.

pour2

Step 6:

Add nozzle back to the spray bottle and you’re done!

Conclusion

So, how well does the DIY Homemade Hairspray hold up?

This a before picture of my hair:

flyaways
I have lots of fly-aways.

And here’s a picture of AFTER I used my homemade hairspray:

hairspraytest
My fly-aways are gone!

Not too bad. The hairspray has a light hold. It does not have a hard or crunchy feel on my hair. I also brushed through my hair after applying the mixture, and it did not flake.

Overall, I like it!  Now, if you are looking for a really strong hold for a mohawk or spikes, this is not the hairspray for you . For a light hold that keeps flyways at bay, this recipe is perfect.

Why not make your own hairspray?

DIY Homemade Foaming Hand Soap – 7 cents per bottle

Foaming Hand Soap

DIY Homemade Foaming Hand Soap – 7 cents per bottle

Do you love Foaming Hand Soap as much as I do? Well, I have a dirty little secret to divulge; that luxurious fluffy soapiness is mostly water.   The real magic is not the soap itself, it’s the pump. The pump aerates the water and soap, therefore creating the foam.

Like it? REPIN it on Pinterest and give it a try!

pic2 The magic of foaming soap…it’s the pump!

Well, no need to buy ready-made bottles of foaming hand soap anymore. Here is a Pinterest hack that really does work. With a small initial investment of a bottle of liquid soap and a foam pump bottle, you can make your own for pennies.

Step 1.

Gather Supplies:
1 empty Foaming Soap Dispenser Bottle
1 Bottle of Liquid Soap

pic1 My Dr. Bonner’s Liquid Castile Soap I bought for half price on clearance!

Note: You can purchase empty “foaming pump dispensers” on Amazon. They are nicer, but expensive. They run about $13-$15 each. It is way more affordable to buy the plastic pre-filled ones and reuse them when they are empty. I have had my two bottles for 2 years. TIP: Check thrift stores and yard sales for empty foaming hand soap bottles!

Step 2.

Fill empty the Foaming Soap Dispenser bottle about a ¼ of the way up from the bottom with liquid soap.

pic3pic4

Step 3.

Add water. Do not fill all the way to the top. You need to leave a bit of “head space” for the pump.

pic5pic6

Step 4.

Screw the top on and give the bottle a little shake to mix.

pic7

Step 5.

Your pump is ready to use! Easy!

pic8

Now, here’s the math.

My cost:

2 foaming bottles (I purchased two ready-made bottles initially)

  • Bottle 1 (Dial) =$3.95
  • Bottle 2 (Kiss My Face, on clearance) =$3.29

One bulk refill bottle of Dr.Bonner’s Castile Soap, 32 oz (on clearance) = $6.39

Initial investment of $13.63

For my family of four, I refill the bottles about twice a month. I originally purchased the Dr. Bonner’s soap TWO years ago, and finished it today.

4 bottles a month x 24 months (2 years) = 96 bottles of soap

$13.63 initial investment divided by 96 bottles of soap I made:

$13.63/96= $0.14 each

After the initial investment in the pump bottles, you’re paying as low as 7¢ per refill.

Is it really cheaper?

That’s 7 cents a bottle! That’s a lot better than paying $3.95 for each bottle.

Bulk refill bottles cost anywhere from $8 – $50. I found a bottle of Dial 33.8 oz for $8.09, which will refill my bottle 4.5 times (@ $1.79 per refill).  Target’s Up & Up brand is $3.49 for a 50 oz bottle, which will refill my bottles 6.7 times (@ $0.52 per refill).  7 cents looks pretty amazing compared to those!

Amazing Foot Scrub – Vinegar & Listerine

Amazing Foot Scrub – Vinegar & Listerine

Who doesn’t love a great pedicure?!  Nothing like getting your feet in shape for summer sandals, sexy backless heels and even going barefoot!  I found a Pinterest post that claimed by mixing two weird ingredients you’d never put together and soaking your feet for 10-15 minutes, you’ll get amazing results! So, I tried it and I was impressed! The dry, dead skin CAME RIGHT OFF!

Check out the two pictures at the bottom – the one on left is before, and the one on the right is after. My dry, dead skin just peeled right off!

If you find this didn’t work, try soaking your feet longer – try 30 to 45 minutes instead.

Try this for yourself and then REPIN our pin on Pinterest!

INGREDIENTS

  • 1 cup Listerine (I used Target brand, you can use any type/color)
  • 1 cup white vinegar
  • 1 cup hot water
  • pumice stone or similar (I used the foot scrubber I got at the dollar store)
you can even just use your fingernails!

DIRECTIONS

  1. Mix liquid ingredients above in large bowl, if bowl is large enough double the recipe so it will cover most of your feet
  2. Soak feet in mixture for 10-15 minutes
  3. Remove feet from liquid soak and use a pumice stone to remove dry skin. You’ll notice it comes right off! You can even just use your fingernails (see picture bottom right)

Wowza! This is a wonderful foot soak and makes for a VERY cheap pedicure!
